Important Shipping Update: Nationwide CO₂ Supply Disruption
Sent on September 17, 2026
Dear Valued Customer,
We want to make you aware of a current supply-chain issue affecting carbon dioxide (CO₂) availability across the United States and, as a result, the availability of dry ice used to safely ship our frozen and perishable products.
What does “Force Majeure” mean?
Our CO₂ supply chain is currently being affected by Force Majeure conditions. Force Majeure is a contractual term used when circumstances outside a supplier’s reasonable control prevent or significantly limit its ability to provide products or services as expected.
In practical terms, this means CO₂ suppliers may be unable to guarantee normal supply volumes or delivery schedules. Supply may be allocated, deliveries may be reduced or delayed, and available CO₂ may need to be prioritized.
Why does a CO₂ shortage affect our shipments?
Carbon dioxide is the primary material used to manufacture dry ice. Liquid CO₂ is cooled and depressurized, causing it to form CO₂ “snow,” which is the dry ice we add to our frozen shipments.
Dry ice is an important part of our shipping process, helping keep frozen and perishable products at appropriate temperatures while in transit. As a result, interruptions in the CO₂ supply chain can directly affect the amount of dry ice available for our outgoing orders.
Why is there a CO₂ shortage?
Unlike what the name might suggest, commercial-grade CO₂ is not simply collected from the air in large quantities. Much of the purified CO₂ used commercially in the United States is recovered as a byproduct of other industrial processes, particularly ethanol and ammonia production.
When these facilities undergo planned maintenance, experience unexpected outages, reduce production, or encounter transportation and distribution constraints, the amount of usable CO₂ entering the supply chain can decline quickly. Because production is concentrated among a limited number of sources, disruptions in one region can create additional pressure on suppliers and customers elsewhere.
This situation is not isolated to Hare Today or our regular supplier. CO₂ users in multiple parts of the country are experiencing supply constraints, including Force Majeure declarations, allocations, reduced availability, and unreliable delivery schedules.
What Hare Today is doing
We are actively working to minimize any potential impact on our customers.
We have been in contact with our existing suppliers and are reaching out to every available alternative CO₂ and dry ice provider that may be able to service our facility. We will continue pursuing additional sources, monitoring supply availability, and evaluating every reasonable option to maintain the dry ice necessary for our shipments.
We are also carefully managing the dry ice currently available to us and will adjust shipping operations if necessary to protect product integrity. Our priority remains shipping your order safely—not simply getting an order out the door when the appropriate materials are unavailable.
What this may mean for future orders
At this time, we are continuing to ship orders as scheduled and are not experiencing shipping delays related to the CO₂ shortage.
However, our current supply is limited. If additional CO₂ or dry ice does not become available, we anticipate that temporary shipping delays could begin in October. Because availability can change quickly, we may not be able to provide an exact timeline in advance.
If future orders are affected, we will communicate updates as soon as additional information becomes available.
We understand how important it is to receive your pet’s food on time, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate circumstances outside of our normal operations.
Our team will continue contacting available suppliers, monitoring the situation closely, and doing everything reasonably possible to maintain safe and reliable shipments.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
As always, if you have questions or concerns, please let us know.
Sincerely,
Ashlee Luke
