Nutrition and Benefits

• This food is low in Sodium. It is also a good source of Niacin, Vitamin B6, Iron, Phosphorus, Copper and Selenium, and a very good source of Protein.
• Given this product is whole, your pet will have the added benefit of insoluble fiber added to the diet.

Adding fur and feathers to a carnivores' raw diet can be beneficial in so many ways:

1. It is a good source of fiber and aids the cleaning of the digestive tract
2. When the digestive tract is clean, it can improve nutrient absorption and can support the immune system
3. Fur can help eliminate worms and parasites
4. Added fiber can help bulk stool and naturally assist in expressing anal glands

Before jumping into whole prey, make sure the raw diet is well established, ensuring a low pH, or highly acidic stomach which is important for our Domesticated Carnivores because digestive enzymes work best in an acidic environment and the acidic nature of the stomach helps to sterilize pathogens and bacteria. This is also important to break down bones.

Helpful Tips and Reminders

🐈 Cats typically do well with poultry as quail is a natural prey.
🐕 Dogs prefer red meats, but poultry is good for rotation.
🐹🐍🦎🐦 Quail is also a natural whole prey food source for ferrets, snakes, lizards and predatory birds.
• Novel protein which can be helpful for animals with sensitivities and/or allergies.
• Incorporating whole prey adds benefits from jaw exercise to teeth cleaning.
• Whole Carcass fiber has shown to be beneficial in diets, but high fiber may lead to lower amounts of pancreatic enzymes. Whole Carcass ground products should be fed with a balance of dressed proteins.

Our mission includes advocating for optimal health and safe handling of raw materials. Make sure to use safe handling practices and reference our Raw Food Education pages.

    Large quail

By Michelle on September 6, 2023

Please bring the large quail back!! My 3 dogs loved them, they got them 1x a week, and it was always a treat they looked forward to!
The undressed quail are not nearly a hit, I think they loved the work that went into tearing the dressed quail apart.
We have since tried whole Rabbits and cavalier, but none of the dogs are interested. Waste of $ on them!
The quail were the best!

    Jumbo quail

By Logan on January 23, 2022

My dogs went crazy for the jumbo quail!

    Another Hit with my Cats

By Kristy on January 14, 2021

My 13 yo finicky boy ate his in 4 bites. My 8 yo played with hers for about 5 minutes first before chowing down and eating every bite. My 6 mo kitten played with hers for about 20 minutes. The old man stepped in to show her how it's done, eating the head first. She watched him avidly. I suspect she will figure out this is food before very long. The chicks are plump and clean, very easy to separate out frozen. I will be ordering these again!

My Dogs Loved The Whole Prey Quail

By Dee Ann on January 11, 2021

I have two labs Tugg Griffin and Khloe Elizabeth both weigh in between 68-70 lean pounds thanks to feeding a raw diet. I tried feeding them the whole prey rabbit first but both of them looked at me like I was crazy. So I was skeptical but hopefully when I bought these. To my relief they absolutely loved them and devoured two of the large size quail each. I wish I had bought these first!!! I just placed another order and made sure the whole prey quail was part of it!! Will continue to buy this protein for them.

Fresh and healthy looking game birds, great for protein variety

By Mareike on November 12, 2020

The jumbo size quail were perfect for my dog (Lab Retriever), and they were gone very quickly, feathers and all. My dog has no interest in eating anything alive, but she gets super excited when we walk outside with one of these quails. And since quail is a generally harder to find protein, I appreciate Hare Today offering them here in such great, fresh quality.

Mini muffins of the cat world.

By Sandra on March 18, 2020

My Savannah loves the quail, I use them for treats. My Bengal seems concerned and pokes them repeatedly until they are rated by my other cat.

    Excellent quality!

By Robbin on February 21, 2020

The day old whole quail are easy to separate frozen, very clean, and plump for little guys. They defrost fairly quickly, but I speed it up sometimes by microwaving a ceramic cereal bowl filled with water. I microwave the water for a minute and a half, put a piece of tin foil over the top, and set the quail on the tinfoil to warm a little faster - I do flip the bird a few times to evenly heat. They are then flexible, still slightly cooler than room temp at the abdomen, but not solid and not too cold for my cat's tummy.

He is an indoor/outdoor cat, and he was interested in the smell of the quail immediately. I did have to jiggle it for him and then finally cut the head off and expose some blood/flesh at the neck for him to begin to eat it. Once he licked the exposed flesh, he quickly finished the job. I think in the future he will understand right away.

Thank you for a beautiful batch of quail!

Response from Hare Today: Robbin is describing how she creates a warm water steam bath. Just remember to never microwave our products themselves.

    Happy Kittens!!

By Dara on January 28, 2019

My 16 week old kittens had these day old quail for the first time and they LOVED

    Makes my cats all growly

By Amy on December 7, 2018

My cats think the day old quails are the bomb. First they have to grab them and throw them up in the air and bat them all over the room for a few minutes, growling every time they put the quail in their mouths. Then they carry them to a private corner of the room and quickly eat them in seconds still growling the whole time. I guess it brings out their primal instincts (but they do not growl with their pinkie mice). I am going up to week old quail and pinkie rats next then maybe try an extra small guinea pig. I love that my cats are eating what they were meant to eat. I also love that Hare Today has all these options for our family members! We love you Hare Today.

    A Family Favorite

By Megan on June 21, 2018

This is by far my cats FAVORITE food. She goes crazy for it and eats the whole thing in a little over a minute. My two dogs also love them, especially the bigger sizes. The birds are always clean and good quality.

    Awesome quality!

By Olivia on December 17, 2017

I got the large quails for my 50 pound pitbull mix. It was her first time eating whole prey and she devoured them without hesitation! The birds looked nice and clean. Will definitely get these again!

    BIG hit with my GSD

By Diana on December 15, 2017

I have an import GSD who has been very picky about raw since introduced 2 years ago when he arrived to the states. He was started with homemade ground and we progressed from there. My dog has a phenomenal nose and will not consume meat or supplements that are substandard..he'd rather starve. My GSD cannot eat chicken or turkey as it causes violent behavior in him. In a quest to find whole, edible bone products for him, I started buying quail from the grocery and his behavior remained stable. These whole prey quail are the first whole prey items I have given my GSD and I can't believe he eats them! He's always been such a prima donna about food, but he loves, loves, loves these quail! My guy is an 80lb male with a very large head and he handles the medium quail perfectly. I could feed him larger quail, but felt the medium quail would be the best 'starter whole prey' for him. My dog does not gulp food and is a careful, methodical eater. If he was a gulper, these medium quail would have been too small for him. Have recently ordered small whole prey rabbits for him....fingers crossed! Thanks, Hare Today!

    Great looking birds!

By Sarah on October 24, 2017

These birds are plump and healthy looking! One of my two dogs enjoyed them, the other one isn’t too sure about quail (she prefers your whole prey bunnies!). I like to offer my dogs whole prey at least once a week to keep things interesting and also for GI health. Your products are always superb!!

    Day-old quail are a HIT!

By Doris on April 14, 2017

One of my two cats absolutely ADORES the day-old quails. She emitted a gentle growl while devouring her first one... and then immediately ran over to me, chirping and begging for more! My other cat doesn't seem to realize that this is food just yet, but I'm sure she will soon come to love them too!

Cat is interested in the frozen ones

By jing on March 28, 2017

The birds are very clean and healthy. When I throw the frozen quail to my cat, he is very interested. He played with it and tried very hard to bite the wings off. I felt it was too hard for him to chew on the frozen one so I put the quail into the sealed bag, put it into the cold water to thaw. Then my cat refused to eat any part of the bird even when I tear it apart. I will still try the frozen one next time and if he won't eat it, I will :D

    yes

By Susan on March 26, 2017

At first Sammy Fire Eyes (cat) did not want them, so I dipped them in boiling hot water and pulled off the skin and he gobbled them up!

    Excellent for cats

By Sam on March 24, 2017

Have bought various sizes from HT over the years and no matter the suppler, they have all been readily accepted by the cats. I can't say that about quail purchased elsewhere. Quality control is top notch. Jumbo quail have a good chance to come with bonus treats, whole quail eggs inside! My cats adore the eggs, but don't usually eat the shell, so once they are done playing, I lightly crush it open.
One jumbo quail satisfies one of my cats all day, and the feathers help move any spring hair excess through their digestive system. Very few feathers remain to be swept up, and the cats get all the benefits of the whole animal. Less savvy cats do well with the smaller quail, eating the entire thing. Especially if some flesh is exposed for them.

    Super impressed!

By Callie on March 2, 2017

I was super impressed when I received the quails! They were extremely clean and healthy looking. It was the first time my dog had eaten whole prey and he loved it! Definitely recommend!

Starting a cat on raw food

By Lacelynn on December 16, 2016

My cat was diagnosed with IBD at 2 years old. The vets suggested mineral oil daily to keep her "lubricated." I ignored that advice and switched her diet to raw to include more water, natural enzymes, fiber and nutrition. That fixed the issues! I NEVER thought this cat would accept raw, but we tried a quail and she has been doing great for 6 years now and we never looked back!

    My Persian cat loves them

By Andrea on October 19, 2016

I'm trying to get my Persian cat to eat more raw foods due to noticing some early stages of stomatitis. These quail came nicely packaged and arrived fresh. Our reformed feral cat wants nothing to do with them, but our Persian has a really good time playing with the quail before eating the whole thing. Not happy about my cat batting a dead bird all over the house, but very happy with my purchase.

    The cat's meow!

By Diana on October 6, 2016

Two of my kitties LOVE the day old quails. I have to fox guard the sink or Mitty will break rules and jump on the counter to steal the zip lock bag! Mitty also meows at me from the second she sees me get a quail out until the dish is set in front of her.

If you're having trouble, try pulling a wing or leg off. Once blood was exposed, that's all it took! About 3 times of me exposing flesh, and now I don't have to!

Thank you for all that you do Tracy and staff!!!!

    Great

By Shandy on August 22, 2016

The quail chicks looked wonderful. One of my kittens seemed to like them; the other didn't. I'll be buying more in the future, but my kittens seem to prefer rodents to birds. Luna did eat them while her sister thought she was crazy. So all in all I'm happy I bought them, but only one of my kittens wanted to eat them.

    large quail

By Amanda on June 25, 2016

Perfect size as a complete meal for my schnauzers

    Quail (adult size)

By Philip on May 16, 2016

I bought adult sized Quail and they were awesome. I usually bought Quail from a different supplier but the Quail I got here were in much better condition and they were a lot bigger and healthier. I got more meat and bones. They ferrets loved them as well.

    Puurrfect treat

By Brittany on April 27, 2016

I was worried my cat wouldn't know what to do with these since I'd never given her whole prey (though she's been on a raw diet her whole life). But she took to them right away! They're very tiny and perfect snack size. It's also good training. I'm trying to teach her to eat bones since she's always been feed grinds and these are good for practicing chewing and getting her jaw strength up.

    Cats go crazy for quail

By Morgan on April 16, 2016

I can't take these out of the freezer without my cats crying at my feet. They want them NOW and don't want to wait until they are thawed.
Perfect small size for starters, and my cats will toss them around for a while before chewing down head first.

    My Dogs LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

By Erin on April 10, 2016

My border collie and Italian greyhound LOVE the jumbo quails. From one bag, they already know what the word "quail" means and run as fast as they can down to the fridge.

The first time, I had to cut the quails in half since this was their first time with feathers on their food. I expected this, since they were the same with their first meal with fur. Second meal of quail - no need to cut at all, they knew exactly what it was.

I realize price is very fair, however being at 7.99/lb, this will be more of a "once in a while food" for me to order... and I know they'll enjoy every bite!

I wish I could attach a photo to this review. I made a link to a few photos of them eating the quail, if you'd like to see here: http://imgur.com/a/cgkWR If that is not allowed on reviews, please feel free to delete the link.

    Nom Nom Nom

By Jessica on October 5, 2015

The quail chicks are a huge hit in our house. We use them instead of the traditional cat treats since they'll get all the good stuff with these!
They defrost fairly quickly and none of my cats has any issue with chewing them up.
